What are graduate entry programmes?

If a programme specifies ‘graduate entry’, it means the applicants are required to have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field so as to ensure that the applicants have the prior knowledge for the degree.

Graduate entry programmes usually have stricter entry requirements but they might be of a shorter duration than a standard degree programme. The programmes are suitable for people who would like to enhance their skills and knowledge to improve their competitiveness in the job market. It is especially true for those who have a tight schedule for work and family tasks and would prefer to take night and weekend classes which are often offered by these programmes.

Graduate entry programmes are available in such degrees as medical, dental, law and business. Examples are as follows:

• Graduate Entry Medicine of the University of Nottingham: a four-year programme offered for applicants with a degree of 2.2 or above in any discipline
• Medicine (graduate-entry) course of the University of Oxford: a four-year programme opened to graduates with a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.1 (or a GPA above 3.5) in applied and experimental science
• Dentistry Graduate/ Professional Entry Programme of King’s College London: a 2-5 year programme with an entry requirement of 1) a minimum of 2.1 undergraduate bachelor degree or international equivalent or 2) a 2.2 undergraduate bachelor degree or international equivalent with a postgraduate degree with at least a Merit overall grade or equivalent in Biosciences
• LLB Law (Graduate Entry) of the University of Edinburgh: a two-year degree with an entry requirement of a 2.1 honours degree or equivalent
• Law (Graduate Entry) LLB of the University of Leicester: a two-year course for applicants with a minimum of a high 2.2 in any degree
• BSc Business and Management (Graduate Entry) of the University of London: a 2-6 year programme offered for applicants with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree which must be at least one year full-time in duration and at a level comparable to a UK bachelor degree
