European Language and Culture Studies

3 or 4 years, ACADEMIC BACHELOR Degree.

Student will study English and one more chosed language: French/ German/ Latvian/ Russian/ Spanish

3 years (with pre-requisites for the 2nd language) or 4 years (without pre-requisites for the 2nd language)

  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (official transcript is required);
  • The grade in English from the GCSE;

About the programme:

The aim of the program is to provide the students an opportunity to acquire basic academic education and the Bachelor’s Degree in the English and German language and culture studies, or in the English and Russian language and culture studies, or in the English and French language and culture studies, Spanish language and culture studies,  promoting acquisition of theoretical knowledge, independent research skills and techniques within the sphere of European language and culture studies, providing an opportunity to prepare oneself for independent professional activity in the spheres, which require for European language – English and German or Russian, or French – proficiency (up to C1 level), and competence in culture.

Main subjects are:

Compulsory study courses - general education humanities studies: Introduction into Culture Studies, World Literature and Culture, Philosophy, Latvian Language for Foreign Students and English language and culture studies, Practical Phonetics, Practical Grammar, Lexico-stylistics, Written and Oral Communication, Culture Studies, 20th Century English Literature in Original Language, Translation Methods and Practice.

Optional study courses - French or German, or Russian, or Spanish, or Latvian language and culture studies: Practical Phonetics, Practical Grammar, Lexico-stylistics, Written and Oral Communication, Culture Studies, 20th Century French or Russian, or Spanish, or Latvian Literature in Original Language, Translation Methods and Practice.

Assessment

For the purpose of assessment of the academic success of the students, the 10 point system, approved by the Ministry of Science and Education shall be applied. At the end of the study course acquisition, the students shall take tests and examinations. For tests, cumulative assessment system shall be applied so, that to motivate the students for work throughout the entire semester. Description of the course acquisition assessment has been incorporated into each particular study course program. At the beginning of each study course, the students are introduced to the assessment system and requirements concerning acquisition of the study courses.
